So, my gear is lost in the mail. Not really their fault, but? I paid for shipping and the item is now 15 days out with no sign on tracking of when I am going to get it. I sent 2 emails with no response. I then called. I was basically told that "thats the thing with the steep and cheap" - its old products and you are getting a discount. No help, no consideration on my price for shipping - nothing. Never buying from either site again.I bought an expensive jacket that arrived with a nonfunctional zipper. The vendor is charging me return shipping for their garbage.I am shopping from Backcountry from last more than 5 years. They were really good with top customer service. I spend thousands of dollars on outdoor gear each year. Recently their customer service went really downhill and really rude. They are more focused on sponsoring youtubers and giving them free gears than giving a good customer service. I am switching to Mossejaw and Campsaver and they are way better. Moosejaw's outlet website will charge you for a freaking shipping. Stay away from Backcountry!I bought a pair of pants for $73 dollars and was only refunded for $53! You will not get back shipping and tax and then they charge you another 6.99 for the label which comes out of what out of what you paid originally! You will basically just be giving them money. Guess I should have read the reviews as they have the same story. POOR!Try putting something in your cart on Steep & Cheap and let it sit there for a few weeks to watch the prices fluctuate depending on the particular sale. I did this with two items while I debated whether to splurge or not and I was shocked how the prices went up when the company offered a sale (say $40 off a $200 purchase) and back down again when the sale expired. If you read this review and others here, I think the theme will become clear. This is a company with shady practices. For some, the deal might be worth it; for me, I'd rather support a company that has the same kind of values I try to uphold in the backcountry.This is how they treat you when they send you the wrong product. In fact, they pictured a product they didn't even have in stock to begin with. I'll be returning the shoes ASAP. Seriously, WHAT ARE THEY THINKING? Dogfunk.com was WAY better than backcountry.com (which owns steep and cheap and they bought out dogfunk). I was very skeptical about dealing them them based on the low score that they received here. But I figured I would take a risk and try it out. I'm not sure where SaC is based out of, but I was a little surprised that 5 pairs of pretty low-profile socks that came to less than 1 lb shipping weight had a tax and shipping combined rate of nearly $14 (6.55 tax + 7.28 shipping). That part seemed a little steep, but hey, I guess "steep" is part of their name. Also upon ordering I did receive an e mail stating that I had been added to their newsletter, however I quickly responded back to tell them to take me off any lists, and they were prompt with responding that it would be no issue. I ended up receiving the package quickly and the correct product arrived and in good condition. So no problems there. I would definitely not want to shop at SaC as a primary outlet for outdoor gear. I would rather use eBay as I can usually get much better deals. The reason I used SaC on this occasion was because they were having a sale on Darn Tough socks and all DT socks come with a lifetime warranty and it's hard to find the ones you need any cheaper than $20 per pair. SaC had them for a little over $13 a pair and after tax and shipping, came to about $16 per pair. Still a decent savings on something I only have to ever buy once. If I had to buy more DT socks, I would check out SaC again, but as stated before, under most circumstances, I can find better prices elsewhere.Yes, I've ordered hundreds of items from S&C or WhiskeyMilitia (backcountry.com) since 2007. I can tell because they keep your history readily available online. Some people on this site seem to have had problems. I have had none. Once I messed up and ordered too quickly trying to snag a deal at the last minute and got the wrong size. It was simple to return and doesn't even require talking to them since they mail you a return slip. No, there are not "knock offs". These are closeouts, last year models, odd sizes, etc. or otherwise good deals used to increase customer base and incentivize future purchases..I was pretty nervous about ordering from this website because of all the bad reviews. But I went ahead and bit the bullet. I did order through PayPal to try and make it easier to get a refund if I had to but this was a non-issue. My order came very quickly, in 2 days, and was in perfect condition. I got jackets that cost $300 on North face for $135, so I'm glad I was patient and waited for the end of season sale. This site is worth it.Recently ordered from this site and it's been a pain in the butt, so much that I would have rather have paid full price on another site to have better service. (1) I paid a few dollars extra for faster shipping and it did not arrive on time (2) when I wrote to ask about this, the reply was unrelated and unhelpful and I received no further help (3) you can't make a return by using an order number, they make you log in, but you have to call if you need to reset your password. Ancient practice.There have been changes and yes times items I was slightly confused about. This is an auction site, with gear from previous years. Yes I've had snags in socks, or ordered too small or big. That's on me for not getting a measurement. Steep n cheep has been with me all over the world and I got to sat I know I can always find a deal. I keep my expectations real and the products are legitimate so I find this company and it's other affiliates affordable and convenient.What you are doing may be legal, but morally i cant support this tactic. Too bad; Ive been a long time customer. Happy to pay a few more bucks at another "backcountry" store. Shame on you.I purchased a kayak from steep and cheap (backcountry.com) and had it shipped to my workplace because it had to be shipped via freight. The kayak was only wrapped in plastic. Someone in my warehouse signed for it. Once I finally got around to inspecting it, the kayak was really neat up. But the worst part is there was a puncture hole in the bottom of it. I called backcountry and they informed me I would have to pay for return freight, and freight back to me for the new kayak. I would have to pay to ship It 3x at the cost of over $300 for a $400 kayak. My advice, pay the extra money before purchasing anything form this joke of a company.I too would have given them 5 stars a couple years ago. They use to have a great selection of items but now seem to only have ski poles, goggles and helmets. I miss the old steep and cheap.:-( I also agree that their prices on some things are still too "steep".Steep and Cheap buys defective products from manufacturers at deeply discounted prices, then they sell them to you. When you buy them and subsequently return them they charge you for shipping which increases their volume with UPS thereby getting them a discount on shipping for all of their sites (. E.g. backcountry.com). The private equity guys that bought backcountry do not care about the long term or the steep&cheap customer. They do care about the backcountry customers. They are trying to lower thier overall shipping costs to sell the company to some other fool. You and I are part of the greater fool theory. No More.So i read the reviews and purchased anyways but was leery about it. Well i paid xtra mony to have my product shipped quicker well you guessed it still not product contacted steep and cheap they told me they would refund the extra in shipping which they have not yet. And im still waiting on my product. Lesson learned when there are that many bad reviews look elsewhere this company needs to go away with service like this.Be very careful of this company I received an email from them saying their warehouse has receive my return and that the money would be on my card. A few months later I go back to check to make sure it went through and sure enough it did not. I contacted them and they said they did oh me $26 no they only the entire amount 78. This place is straight up scamming people they did reluctantly return my money but it's scary to think that the company will tell you they refunded your money and not actually do it.They may have some great deals, but they misrepresented a product and charged me to return it. Their product description of a particular sleeping bag was wrong. I contacted them, and they sent a canned email reply. No real human response. I paid $8 shipping to receive the item and they charged me another $7 to send it back using their return label. I won't buy from them again due to their terrible customer service.They offer one price and when you go to select the size (I am of average height and build) the price increase. Poor show.I ordered one Stoic merino wool garment to see if it measured up to Icebreaker--if it did, great! But it didn't. I wore it once and got really sweaty doing practically nothing and the garment had a very strong, very weird odor---not just of damp wool but also a chemical smell and something like beef broth! SUPER disgusting. I washed it and it smelled just as bad when damp out of the washer. I sent it back and am anticipating a battle to get a refund. Now I'm really glad I only bought one and not two like I nearly did. I will NEVER buy from this company again and will tell everyone I know to avoid them.I was skeptical but went to a store, tries on several Costa sunglasses and lens colors, discovered a style and copper mirror that was sensational, found the glasses on Steep and Cheap, orders them and got them in two days as represented. They were $268 in store I looked at and I paid a little over $75 dollars including tax and shipping. I got them today and they are perfect. I can't believe i saved almost $200 Unbelievable!Tried to make a purchase on Steep and Cheap for $20, they do not offer guest checkout and force you to sign up with email. They also do not offer a subscribe/unsubscribe checkbox, they automatically sign your email up for their mailing list, no big deal. After the first spam email I got I message CS to take me off and they said they did, I waited 10 days before submitting a complaint to the FTC and BBB. Still no response but still continued spam harassment. Me saving $5 was not worth the continued harassment and soon to be legal action I need to take on this POS company. Its 2019, unsubscribing really shouldn't be that hard!
